September: Polly

Math:

In Math, Polly is doing Saxon Math 3.  She has completed lessons 1 through 21B, as well as several timed tests.  Being timed for the tests was starting to stress her out a bit, so we stopped the timing for a while, and have just recently resumed it again.  She always completes the rest of the questions once her timer is up.  The following is her most recent math lesson and timed test:

Polly is also working on her multiplication tables already with her Dad, and she's doing very well with them.  Although we haven't covered multiplication in her lessons yet, she understands the concept and knows many of the lower ones by heart.  She has also been doing Bedtime Math with me on an app in the evenings, which she loves doing.

Language Arts:

In Language Arts, Polly really does excel.  She's working through Level 3 of the Good & the Beautiful Curriculum, and has completed lessons 1 through 15:

Here is a recent writing sample from her as well.  Polly is such a fun writer, with a huge imagination and a great sense of humour:

Polly is always reading so many novels, it's hard to keep up with everything she's read.  White Fang, The Magician's Nephew, Gentle Ben, and the first couple of Harry Potter books (I believe she's now reading the third) are a few she has recently or is recently reading.  We are also reading Bridge to Terabithia as a family.  We've also read Charlotte's Web and Runaway Ralph as a family this month.  Here is some of her worksheets that coincide with Bridge to Terabithia:

Polly is amazing at memorization and loves poetry, so she's already memorized several short poems.  In addition to her poetry memorization, she has memorized the first 2 paragraphs of the Living Christ document, and has a goal to memorized all 12 paragraphs before Christmas.  Another thing she's memorizing is the Articles of Faith.  She has the first four memorized so far.  Both of these documents are packed with large, complicated words, that are quite advanced, so it's a pretty impressive feat:

Polly has been working on her penmanship as well as cursive writing and typing.  Here is her recent cursive writing pages:

Science:

Polly has completed her Rock & Minerals unit in Science.  She has been working out of her Alberta Aligned work book, as well as researching on the internet, finding rocks outside and classifying them, and she has read a Magic School Bus chapter book on Rocks & Minerals:

She also did a fun experiment making Rock Candy:

While studying Rocks & Minerals, Polly took a field trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park, as well as one to Writing on Stone Provincial Park, where she was able to look at and discuss rock samples and different kinds of soils:

Polly has now moved on to the Hearing and Sound Unit.  She has done a bit of reading in a book called Wonders of Science:

Social Studies:

Polly is studying India in Social Studies right now.  She's loving the package Shawna gave us from Teachers Pay Teachers, and she has been enjoying reading the textbook, and watching the suggested videos within her worksheets.  Here is a sample of a couple of the worksheets she's completed:

We are also listening to Story of the World part 1 as part of our Social Studies enrichment.  Writing on Stone was another great place to visit, as we learned a lot about the area and its history from the Visitor's Centre.

  1. Polly, What a beautiful collection of learning you have chose to showcase for the month of September. I appreciate your hard work which is evident by the progress you have made so far. You have really dug into your math program and I am impressed that you are challenging yourself with timed fact practice. Your reading is impressive and I enjoyed reading your assignment on what makes a book worth reading. I agree with you that when reading is interest driven it is so much more enjoyable. Your Mom is right in that you have a great sense of humor and I enjoyed seeing that come through in your writing. I am happy that you are enjoying the materials I printed off for you for Social Studies and you are "rocking" your science program. Keep up the great work. I am excited to see the progress that you make in the month of October!!!
